It was announced this week that the company I work for--OnSport--has been acquired by Wasserman Media Group, which SportsBusiness Journal ranked as the 4th best sports agency last year. You can read about the acquisition here.
As some background, WMG is a leading sports management company and naming rights seller, with 17 offices in four countries. It owns the digital rights to various sports and entertainment content which it distributes across media platforms. WMG also owns a team (AFL LA Avengers) and consults on sponsorship issues for corporate clients (similar to OnSport).
This deal is good for both companies. It gives us expanded reach (we only previously had 1 office-in Raleigh, NC) and access to additional resources. We give WMG a strong presence in consulting and media rights negotiations--we are essentially becoming their main consulting arm.
What does this mean for me? Better vacation to start (I'll be off all next week now) and more opportunities for growth. Everything else should be business as usual, though it will be interesting to see what will change now that I will be working for a much larger company (WMG has about 300 employees; OnSport had about 40). Overall, I'm excited about the new company and the opportunities it presents.
