Recently I stumbled upon the activity/hobby/something I want to start doing called Geocaching (not to be confused with the trend, Lifecaching, where people collect and keep a bunch of stuff to validate their lives). For those who don't know, Geocaching is a game for portable gps users. People hide random stashes of items, or caches, in random places and cache-hunters have to find them, using only location coordinates and maybe a few hints. A cache might be hidden in the bushes outside Bojangles or miles deep in the woods off of a dirt road. Ok...you might think, so what? There's a few geeks out there who have no life and this is the only thing they do for fun, right? Actually, this is getting pretty big. You can search for caches near you (and find out more about this stuff) on www.geocaching.com. A quick search revealed that there are over 1500 caches within 50 miles of me. Hiking is too boring and slow for me, but this seems like a cool way to get outside and do something challenging at the same time. If anyone has any recommendations for portable gps units, let me know.
